How did you get into the painting and decorating business?

My dad set up as a decorator here in West Cumbria in 1968. In 1983 as a spotty youth I joined the business to learn a trade, now I'm running the firm.

Do you employ anyone else?

Two lads work for me - Mark and Scott. Mark's been with me over 7 years but I've known him since college. Scott was a school leaver who we trained and put through college. My wife Michelle is a professional soft furnishing manufacturer and makes curtains and cushions etc to complement our decoration, so we really are a family affair.

What's the key to your success?

Over the years by carefully working with our customers both new & existing we offer unrivalled customer service, to transform their wishes into reality.

We have always advised our customers on the best choices for specification and problem solving. We also offer advice on colour scheming and have a good selection of wallpaper books.

Do you specialise in any particular area?

Not really, our jobs range from painting a front door to a complete redecoration of a church.

What difference has being a Dulux Select Decorator made to your business?

The Dulux Select Decorator Scheme has enhanced my business and I can't imagine not being part of the scheme. It's great being associated with a blue chip company such as Dulux, it really helps make the small business stand head and shoulders above the crowd.

What do you enjoy doing when you're not decorating?

My son & I train at Jujitsu and we both achieved our 1st Dan Black Belts, although he got his first!
