Achieving prestige on a budget

September 2010

Budgets for refurbishment projects have been cut across all markets, providing an added challenge for professionals - even more so where a specialist finish is required. However, paint needn't cost the earth, and contrary to popular belief, when it comes to value for money and excellent quality, it doesn't have to be one or the other. With this in mind, Nicolas Guichard, Senior Brand Manager for Glidden Trade, describes how appliers can redecorate prestigious properties on limited funds while staying sympathetic to their original design.

Colour needn't cost the earth

"When it comes to colour, there is a perception that a creative design scheme will be costly and stretch the budget. However, in reality, a splash of colour can often be one of the easiest, most cost effective options to refresh an interior and create an aspirational finish.

"For an older building, or a heritage project, it is important that the colours used are carefully considered to ensure they are authentic and in-keeping with the original design. Selecting a paint brand that offers a wide palette of colours, while also delivering a quality finish, is essential. A reputable brand will also offer expert advice and colour support, which professionals can take advantage of.

"Glidden Trade has aimed to make its colour range easily accessible to decorators and end-users, the new Glidden Trade colour card and product guide provides a simple reference tool, displaying 240 of the most popular Glidden Trade colours."

Create an effect

"When redecorating a prestigious property, maintaining the architectural integrity of the building is crucial and will often involve working with intricate features or a period design scheme. What's more, decorators are now under greater pressure from customers to achieve this on a budget - more for less.

"Even in the most traditional of properties, it is still possible to achieve a prestigious finish by using affordable paint brands that also deliver added value support. Choosing products supported by a strong brand heritage, such as Glidden Trade paints, which come with the backing and service of the world famous ICI Paints AkzoNobel brand, assures customers that their decorator will provide a quality finish, which also delivers value for money."

Putting it into practice
Billiard room in the Whitworth centre

One example of where Glidden Trade has been used to refurbish a heritage project is The Whitworth Centre. Based on the edge of Peak District, the centre has undergone a complete redecoration programme as part of a lottery funded refurbishment project.

Renowned for its grand architecture and elaborate design, the Whitworth Centre is steeped in Victorian history. So when it came to renovating the building, it was essential that the finish was sympathetic to the original design and in keeping with the building's sophisticated style.

Having worked on a number of high profile projects in the region previously, award winning Derbyshire Decorators Ltd were drafted in to undertake the project. With an impressive client base, the firm is renowned for its attention to detail and its commitment to completing every project to a high standard. The company used Glidden Trade Vinyl Matt on the internal walls at the centre, providing a cost-effective option without compromising on quality.

Glidden Trade Vinyl Matt is a professional quality matt emulsion, particularly suited for large job applications in commercial, institutional and industrial structures, minimising surface imperfections. Derbyshire Decorators Ltd used colours from the extended Glidden Trade colour range in warm, authentic tones, to give the centre a fresh feel, taking care to preserve the historic features.

Pete Marshall, owner of Derbyshire Decorators Ltd, commented: "Its dramatic architecture and traditional features are what sets the Whitworth Centre apart from other event and conference centres and, therefore, it was extremely important to preserve the intricate detail of the building and ensure that the paintwork was reflective of the building's period design.

"Even working to a budget, Glidden Trade provided a great return on investment, offering a fantastic spreading rate and a striking finish."

Nicolas Guichard, Senior Brand Manager at Glidden Trade commented: "The Glidden Trade range provides customers with a comprehensive range of high quality paints, in a wide range of colours, at an affordable price. The Whitworth Centre experiences a high volume of visitors every year, so a great performing paint which also provides a quality finish was required and Glidden Trade ticked all the boxes."
