Keeping up appearances

When undertaking a commercial refurbishment project, there are several challenges facing painting contractors. Nicolas Guichard, Senior Brand Manager at Glidden Trade, outlines key considerations and describes how these can be put into practice.

"First impressions count, and none more so than a company's headquarters or offices, which can often be a showcase for its products or services. Therefore, when redecorating a large commercial property, there are a number of factors to consider. Durability is key, as a well maintained building gives a positive reflection on a company and how it appears to its employees, visitors and stakeholders, so using a high performance coating that will stay looking good throughout the maintenance cycle is essential.

"As well as preserving, decoration can in fact enhance and reflect a corporate identity. One way of doing this is by matching the paint work with brand colours. Often a brand's identity is built around a particular colour or multiple colours, ensuring it is familiar to its customers. One example of this is a leading cola brand which over the years has become synonymous with the vibrant red in its logo. It is therefore important for appliers to work with a manufacturer which can not only offer a wide variety of colours, but also has the ability to create bespoke tints for specific projects.

"There are a number of resources available that can help contractors on large projects when selecting colour. In addition to tools such as our colour cards and fandecks, Glidden Trade experts are able to share specialist knowledge on creating decorative schemes and provide advice on colour matching.

"Working with a paint manufacturer to create a design that is specifically tailored to tackle the requirements of a particular job will ultimately help contractors deliver an outstanding, long-lasting finish."

Putting it into Practice
Manchester City Football Club

Glidden Trade paint was used to make over Manchester City Football Club, one of the newest football stadiums in the premier league.

Contractor, F O'Donnell and Sons Ltd, called on the experts at Glidden Trade for the refurbishment of the main reception, all concourses, refreshment areas and toilets within the City of Manchester Stadium. Glidden Trade Acrylic Eggshell was applied on all walls in the famous blue and white home strip colours.

Glidden Trade Acrylic Eggshell was selected for its tough and durable properties. With 48,000 fans attending each home game at the stadium, it was crucial that the paint should be able to withstand wear and tear and retain a newly painted appearance throughout the whole season and into summer when the former Commonwealth Games venue is used for concerts and events.

The trade paint is particularly suited for large commercial jobs such as this due to its easy application, quick drying formula and mid-sheen finish, which in turn reduces application time and associated costs.

Peter O'Donnell, Contracts Manager at F O'Donnell and Sons Ltd explains: "As a family run company, we are renowned for offering high quality service and delivering great results. We have built up a trusted relationship with Glidden Trade as the brand offers reliable and quality products, at a competitive price, which couldn't be more relevant in the current economic conditions.

"The stadium is now such a landmark in the city of Manchester that we needed to make sure we did a great job for the football club. We chose Glidden Trade Acrylic Eggshell as it's a very good quality product that we have full confidence in for key projects."
