ASA's new online regulations explained

Painters and decorators who have their own website or use social media to promote their services now need to make sure they are following the Advertising Standards Authority's (ASA) new online marketing rules.

As of 1st March 2011, all companies' marketing communications - whether on their own website or on another third-party site such as Twitter or Facebook - must meet the criteria set out in the Code of Non-broadcast Advertising, Sales Promotion and Direct Marketing (CAP).

The new rules are intended to give consumers greater protection online and call for businesses, both large and small, to make sure the messages on their websites or social media channels are 'legal, decent, truthful and honest'.

To help businesses get to grips with the new guidelines, the ASA has set up CAP Services. Painters and decorators who want more information about this should go to: www.cap.org.uk.
