Avoid sending tax returns for 'A N Other' pleads taxman

The taxman has urged business owners to be careful in how they fill out tax returns if they don't want to accidentally cause problems for their staff.

HM Revenues and Customs (HMRC), in charge of collecting taxes in the UK, has released examples of the mistakes that employers commonly make in PAYE returns.

The project has been backed by the Prime Minister, David Cameron. Commenting, he said: "I would encourage all Members of Parliament to take advantage of this opportunity to find out what it is really like to run a small business."

While amusing, these mistakes can lead to workers having incorrect deductions made from their pay, as well as business bosses having to waste time correcting mistakes.

Jim Harra, HMRC's Director of Customer Operations, said: "We really want employers to check that they are sending us the right details for all their employees, to make life easier for them, HMRC and their employees."
