Campaign to cut VAT wins approval from decorators' association

A campaign to cut VAT on home improvement work has been given a boost this week, with the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA) putting its weight behind the movement.

In 2009, EU countries were given a special allowance to reduce VAT to five per cent on the repair, maintenance and improvement of private dwellings, should they wish to do so.

The 'Cut the VAT' campaign, led by the Federation of Master Builders, argues that reducing VAT for home renovation works in the UK would help the economy to grow; increase employment; and reduce the amount of empty homes in the country.

A VAT reduction would certainly help painters and decorators by making their services more affordable to homeowners in need of professional help.

The campaign has already attracted some high profile backing, with many senior politicians and trade bodies showing their support. The PDA is the latest organisation to get on board.

This is a great idea. Personally I am just outside the VAT threshold at the moment and am reluctant to increase the size of the business as that would take me into the VAT bracket.
As 90% of my projects are domestic , adding 20% onto my price would mean me not winning as many jobs.
