Cash incentives for hiring apprentices

Painters and decorators could benefit from a government scheme to offer small businesses a £1,500 reward for hiring their first young apprentice.

Business Secretary, Vince Cable hopes the new plan will help young people get a head start in the workplace, and enable businesses to gain skilled workers.

He also promised to slash red tape, making it simpler, quicker and easier for employers to take on trainees.

Commenting on the initiative, Cable said: "Apprenticeships are proved to boost the life chances of young people, and are a sound investment in our future competitiveness. So when times are tough, itÂ’s right that we provide additional support to help the smallest firms meet training costs."
