East Midlands businesses most optimistic

Painters and decorators in the East Midlands could well be among the most optimistic in the country, as a recent survey showed that the region is one of the most positive in the UK about future business growth.

More than two-thirds of companies in the area said they were hopeful about trading conditions over the next few years, according to the research by Barclays Corporate.

Respondents in Northern Ireland and Scotland also scored highly, but only 44 per cent of London firms shared their enthusiasm.

The survey found that Brits were generally positive about the UK's long-term economic prospects, with half expecting activity to pick up completely by 2021.

Kevin Wall, Managing Director for Barclays Corporate, commented: "It is clear that the majority of businesses believe in the fundamental strength of the UK as a place to do business, and this underlines the temporary nature of the challenges we are currently experiencing."
