Family businesses have happier workers

Is your painting and decorating company a family-run affair? If so, then you could be one of the most satisfied employees in the UK.

Research conducted by the University of Birmingham and the Unquoted Companies Group found that people doing their day-to-day jobs alongside relatives are happier than those hired by other types of private companies.

The study also discovered that such workers are more satisfied, loyal and secure in their position than individuals recruited by other firms.

Commenting, Stanley Siebert, Professor of Labour Economics at Birmingham University, said: "Family businesses tend to treat employees much more transparently and consistently than other employers. In particular, [they] encourage long term employment."
