Health and safety rules reviewed
UK employment minister, Chris Grayling, announced a Government plan that could see half of all health and safety laws abolished within the next three years, freeing sole traders from the burden of red tape.
Following a report into safety regulations published by Professor Ragnar E Löfstedt, Grayling said the Government hoped to "put common sense back at the heart of health and safety" by getting rid of the rules that place unnecessary burdens on small businesses.
Löfstedt's report recommends that health and safety laws shouldn't apply to those who are self-employed - whose work poses no risk to anyone other than themselves.
Grayling said: "Our reforms will root out needless bureaucracy and be a significant boost to the millions of self-employed people who will be moved out of health and safety regulation altogether."
This is good news for painters and decorators, who might find themselves bogged down with inessential regulations.
