HMRC begins spot check on small businesses

Painters and decorators who don't have their accounts in order might want to do so soon, as a number of small businesses across the country are now facing spot checks from the taxman.

As part of a campaign to improve the quality of record keeping, HMRC is expected to inspect around 200,000 companies over the next four years.

The checks have already begun, so it is the ideal time for painters and decorators to get their finances sorted. This is a legal requirement of all businesses and failing to do so could result in a £3,000 fine.
