Installing winter tyres will not impact insurance

Painters and decorators who use vans as part of their business can be reassured that fitting winter tyres onto their vehicles will not affect their car insurance rates.

According to Met Office reports, the last winter in Britain was the harshest in 30 years, and it looks as though we’ll be facing another cold snap over the coming months. Winter tyres can dramatically increase performance and safety on snow-covered, icy and frosty roads.

In response to this, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has reassured drivers that individuals who take the extra precautions against icy weather will not be penalised by insurance providers, as long as they meet the vehicle manufacturers' specifications.

Nick Starling, director of general insurance at the ABI, said: "Insurers do not want to penalise motorists who take steps, like fitting winter tyres, to improve their safety on dangerous winter roads.

"Last year cold weather came early and there was some uncertainty for customers about the insurance implications of fitting winter tyres. This commitment clarifies the position for motorists."
