Leave businesses alone, deputy PM tells regulators
Small companies will soon face less interference from inspection bodies, the deputy prime minister, Nick Clegg, has announced.
Speaking at a meeting of small business leaders, Clegg said that regulators often get in the way of enterprise and that the Government intended to "liberate small business" from the grip of red tape.
Company inspections will be limited to two visits a year, he explained, with inspectors such as the Environment Agency and the Health and Safety Executive fighting it out for who gets priority.
Clegg also vowed to end on-the-spot inspections. He asked: "Why should regulators be able to turn up at your door whenever they want and as often as they want?"
He went on to say that: "Where people have expressed support for regulation, we're keeping it [...] But if it's tedious and pointless, it's going."
