New centre launched to teach green refurb skills

A new training centre to teach green working methods to young tradesmen was officially opened last week.

The Centre of Refurbishment Excellence, located in Stoke-on-Trent, was opened by Communities Minister, Andrew Stunnell. It will act as a hub to train young contractors - among them painters and decorators - the latest green building and refurbishment skills and techniques.

With the Green Deal set to encourage millions of home owners to improve their homes so that they waste less energy, it is clear that the skills needed in the refurbishment industry will focus more and more on environmentally-friendly methods.

The new centre should give young trainee painters and decorators, as well as experienced professionals, the skills they need to meet this new demand.

Launching the Centre, Stunnell said: "I'm delighted to be opening the new national centre for green building expertise - the new skills hub will become an international centre of excellence for providing the right skills to retrofit homes."
