New measures to improve apprenticeships announced
In a move that is set to shake-up how many young painters and decorators are trained, the Government has revealed new ways to improve the quality of apprenticeships.
Under the proposals made by Skills Minister, John Hayes, all new apprenticeships for 16-18 year olds will have to last for at least a year and include a rigorous amount of on-the-job learning.
The National Apprenticeship Scheme, in charge of overseeing all apprenticeship programmes, will be given more power to clamp down on employers whose training schemes fail to meet the new standards, with the possibility of taking away state funding.
The Government also plans to make it easier for small businesses to take on new apprentices by removing some of the current barriers.
Hayes said: "With more employers and more apprentices involved in the programme than ever before, we will continue to raise standards and ensure the high quality of every apprenticeship."
