Regulator warned to stamp down on postal costs

Small firms, such as painters and decorators, which use the Royal Mail to do business, could be harmed by plans to increase stamp prices, a lobbying group has told the postal industry's regulator.

The regulator, Ofcom, is considering whether to let the Royal Mail increase the prices it charges for stamps by up to 50 per cent, which the postal service claims is necessary to make it profitable again.

However, the Forum of Private Business (FPB), a representative of small business interests, has warned Ofcom that the increases would hit small businesses the hardest. Tradesmen will certainly welcome the FPB's intervention, as many still rely heavily on the postal service to send out invoices and receipts.

Jane Bennett, FPB's head of communications, said: "Small businesses are regular users of the [postal] service and would be the hardest hit by any increases, and it's these businesses which are already experiencing high business costs".
