Small business owner to advise government on apprenticeships

The Government has made a few decisions recently that should help tradesmen who want to take on apprentices, but there could be more good news on the way, with the appointment of a new adviser to make sure that small firms really are able to take on trainees easily and effectively.

The Skills Minister, John Hayes, confirmed this week that Jason Holt, an entrepreneur who has set up his own training academy, will head up a review to look at what the Government has already done and find what more it can do to support SMEs.

The employer-led review will build on the initiatives that have already been put in place, and Holt will speak to a wide range of small employers to understand the situation from their point-of-view and to discuss how else the process of training apprentices can be simplified.

Holt said of his new role: "I am delighted to have been asked by Ministers to lead this review. It is vital that we make the apprenticeship route as accessible as possible for SMEs."
