Success for free asbestos training scheme

A scheme led by the Health & Safety Executive to warn tradesmen about the dangers of asbestos is to be extended, thanks to better than expected support from training companies.

With 20 tradesmen a week dying from asbestos-related diseases, the HSE wants to teach young contractors about its dangers and let them know that it remains a very real threat.

It set a goal of 4,000 hours of training to be donated during September, but the target was smashed and now over 13,000 hours of free classroom and online teaching time has been offered over the next couple of months.

HSE director Karen Clayton said: "The response has been overwhelming. This training will help prevent a hidden killer from claiming another generation of British tradesmen. A few hours spent in a classroom or in front of a computer could be a life saver."
