Survey reveals small business optimism

A new survey has revealed that almost 80 per cent of small businesses, such as painting and decorating firms, have had a better year than they had expected to.

The research, carried out by mobile phone giant, Orange, quizzed entrepreneurial bosses about their experience of 2011 and asked for their predictions for the year ahead.

As well as saying that they had fared better than they thought they would over the last 12 months, four fifths of those surveyed also said that they expect to do just as well, or even better next year, despite the difficult economic conditions.

Commenting on the findings, Martin Stiven, vice president of business at Orange, said: "It is encouraging to see that despite a challenging climate, the UK's SMEs are cautiously optimistic about the year ahead."

Hayes said: "With more employers and more apprentices involved in the programme than ever before, we will continue to raise standards and ensure the high quality of every apprenticeship."
