Taxman toughens up on tradesmen
Painters and decorators better watch out! The taxman is currently targeting plumbers whose finances are not in order, sending out a warning to other tradespeople in the process.
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) announced that they are investigating the cases of 600 plumbers who have fallen behind on their payments - and the body has already arrested five men, proving that it is serious about cracking down on this criminal offence.
The news follows a government scheme, which appealed to industry members to flag up their financial queries without fear of punishment.
John Pointing, Assistant Director of HMRC Criminal Investigations, said: "These arrests send a clear message that HMRC will take action against those who choose not to come forward and pay the tax they owe."
Although no direct appeal has yet been made to painters and decorators, this latest news may encourage them to check that their accounts are in order.
