Yellow Pages destined for the scrapheap

Yellow Pages destined for the scrapheap

It has long been a way for local tradesmen to publicise their services and find new work, but the Yellow Pages could soon be consigned to the history books, according to small business owners.

Touch Local, a local business search engine, revealed the startling finding as it launched its 2011 Local Business Overview Report.

With online sources, such as the electronic version of Yellow Pages, yell.com, and business rating sites such as ratedpeople.com, increasingly becoming the way small businesses market themselves, the report found that bosses question whether anyone under 50 will be using print directories by the end of 2012.

Instead, local businesses, such as painting and decorating firms, are ever more likely to turn to digital networking as a way to boost their profile - 96 per cent of those surveyed in the report stated that they will be upping their spend on social media sites.

Commenting on the trends, the report's author, Ivelina Arabadzhieva, said: "As our data shows, it seems that more and more businesses plan to move away from traditional print advertising, instead turning their attention to digital and new media channels".

I completely agree with this. I was in the Yellow Pages book for a number of years and work ticked over ok. However a few years ago i stopped the yellow pages and ensured my website (www.robgardner.co.uk) was on the front of google. I have never looked back...work is now VERY busy, much more so than when i was in the book !
